The Shoppers are elderly and isolated women who, like many of my other figures, are struggling along in a barren environment. As well as painting natural wildernesses I put my figures in the impersonal deserts of modern urban life with its nondescript architecture, harsh neon and shining malls whose polished surfaces are a foil to the dishevelled though resilient figures that go through them.
