The watercolours in this series were done in the street in Fez and Marrakesh. The figure is depicted in bright light by which it is transfigured, erased or exposed. It is casting a black shadow which is like a sundial, fixing it in time as in space. Many of the figures in my work are types of traveller or pilgrim struggling in wilderness, and the blank, white paper suggests the illimitable against which these time-bound wanderers are set. The Islamic dress of jellaba or burqa suggests a figure rooted in the actual but with a religious identity.
