Westerns, Samurai films and poetry are sources for my recurring image of the Rider. Poetic influences are Andrew Marvell’s Civil War poems, the anonymous Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and Shakespeare’s plays. Tension between energy and dismemberment is part of my idea and the ‘Horsemen’ paintings show the figures partly erased and disfigured like battered images on a frieze.
